PHOTOGRAPHY
my work is about fragility
about the ephemerals of daily beauty
lost beauty
found beauty
about sadness and longing
about how we make a world from our imagination
a world to live in
I look for the small miracles in a fragile everyday life.
I find sensuality in forms, lines, colours; hidden and revealed,
in a world beyond the mirror.
Not an image of reality, but a different world.
Real in its own way.
Pictures are not images of reality; they reveal as much as they hide.
They never show the world 'as it is'; they create a world.
When I was a child, near our garden was a shed, a hidden place where I sometimes went to play with my sister. There were lots of glasses piled one upon another, they were mirrors, they reflected a multiple world; it seemed one could enter these worlds one after the other; they were like Giordano Bruno's “infiniti mundi”.
Like the Troubadours taught us Love as we know it today, photographs – and all arts – teach us about our world; they create it, as once Romantic Love was created (and is ours now).
Often we recognize a new image as being ours already, maybe that is what Plato's ideas tell us; we see something that refers to something we already knew...
-----------
I'm especially attracted by transparencies; light that falls through leaves, flowers, fabrics, porcelain(...); setting something apart, showing something unnoticed before. I come from a world of graphic printing; for years I made etchings and dry needles (books) with my printing press, after living abroad with my family I returned to an almost forgotten passion for ceramics as well...
I love colors, faces, traces, shadows, signs of use that tell a story...
Photographing is part of my work as an artist. I use digital with enthusiasm but I love the craft, the handwork, of film. Most of my recent photographic work is made with medium format camera's.
I want to combine different arts, to experiment and to find new ways (that usually are born from my many errors..; a bit as in cooking... as in trying to educate children, as in growing flowers, as in loving...)...
